The Veteran’s Medical Benefits Package

U.S. veterans who served on active duty, air service, or naval service and did not receive a dishonorable discharge are eligible for several benefits. This includes financial and medical assistance. To qualify for the medical benefits package, you must first enroll with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

In Marion, Indiana, veterans can apply for VA health benefits online by completing and submitting VA Form 10-10EZ. Alternatively, they can make the application by contacting the local Marion VA Medical Center via the phone.

What are the primary medical services covered by the VA health care program?

VA provides free medical services for conditions caused or worsened by your military service. The organization also offers free health care services to disabled veterans, former POWs, and those who have severe injuries.

Congress funds the VA health care program annually. Due to the limitation of the funds, VA has priority groups that range from number one to eight, with number one being the highest priority. You will be eligible for a high-priority group if you meet some specific requirements from VA.

Below is a list of essential medical services covered by the program.

  • Preventative care services; immunization against infectious diseases like Covid-19, health exams, and health education
  • Inpatient hospital services; kidney dialysis, surgery, medical treatments, intensive care for mental or physical conditions, and other specialized care services.
  • Urgent and emergency services; non-life-threatening conditions that might require urgent attention.
  • Mental health services; depression, substance use problems, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Drugs and medical services to support your treatment; ultrasounds, blood work, X-rays, therapy and rehabilitation services, or additional services like prosthetic items, cancer care, radiation, and audiology.
  • Non-medical services to support your treatment; catering for travel-related treatment, caregiver support, and transportation to medical appointments.

The services not covered under the VA health care program

Some of the medical services not included in the VA medical benefits package are;

  • Abortions
  • Non-medical cosmetic surgery like hip enlargement surgery
  • Gender alteration surgery
  • Spa membership

Can I use VA and other health insurance programs together?

You may qualify for VA medical benefits even if you have already enrolled in other health insurance programs like Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, and private insurance plans. Enrolling different programs also ensures that almost all your health care costs are covered. Medicare, for example, does not pay for healthcare-related services such as physical exams or long-term in-home care. However, these are covered in the VA medical benefits package.

VA might require you to provide them with information on your health insurance coverage. The VA will bill your private insurance provider for any condition or injuries unrelated to your military service.
