Receiving that denial letter in the mail can make anyone’s heart sink. However, this is quite common in many cases. According to a leading disabilities site, the Social Security Administration denies more than half of applicants who apply for support.
The reasons for denying a claim can vary, as applicants’ circumstances aren’t always the same.
Why the SSA may deny a claim
Here are some instances where they may reject a request:
- Lack of medical evidence: Those looking to qualify for disability benefits must often prove their condition is so severe that it prevents them from working. To be successful in getting these claims, applicants typically must provide medical records that show the severity of their impairment. For example, a person’s medical records may not show substantial evidence that their condition makes it nearly impossible to hold down a job.
- Failure to follow doctor requests: If one’s doctor prescribes treatment and they don’t follow through, that can cause issues. That’s because it can be difficult for the SSA to determine whether an applicant is disabled or merely ignoring treatment.
- Applicants don’t meet income requirements: In most cases, a person’s income doesn’t matter when they’re applying for support, as many people can still obtain disability payments while still working part-time. However, if a person is earning more than $880 a month, their claim may get rejected.
- Failure to cooperate with agency: It’s often in a person’s best interest to productively engage with the SSA, especially during the application process. To do so, those wanting benefits must usually give the SSA the proper documentation, show up to scheduled medical exams and remain in good standing with the person handling their case. Failure to do so may result in getting their claim denied.
Applicants can appeal their denial
Despite their rejection, those looking to obtain disability benefits can appeal their decision. Typically, applicants have around two months to do so. However, if they wait longer than 60 days, they usually have to start the process all over again, which may not look good on their appeal. That’s why those who got denied may want to do so immediately.
The process of applying for Social Security benefits can be a lot to manage. Whether that’s due to keeping track of deadlines or making sure the paperwork gets filled out correctly, it can be overwhelming to some. Luckily, there is help available.
