Top benefits for veterans’ spouses

On Behalf of | Jan 7, 2022 | Uncategorized

Being the spouse of a veteran often requires a lot of sacrifices. It is only fair that the VA supports you as well as your partner. Luckily, you are entitled to several benefits aimed at helping you lead a healthy and happy life. Read on to find out more on the top benefits for veterans’ spouses.

Healthcare benefits

Veteran spouses can access various health and medical programs. They include the following:

  • TRICARE: Through this program, you’ll be able to receive comprehensive health benefits such as dental plans, health plans and medical prescriptions. It also includes programs for family members with special needs.
  • CHAMPVA: Veterans’ spouses get health care services and health insurance through CHAMPVA. It includes all dependants who fail to qualify for TRICARE.
  • Pharmacy benefits: Once you qualify for CHAMPVA, you also be able to receive prescription benefits. Either the VA’s own pharmacy or a local option will give you access to your prescribed medicine.

Educational benefits

Supporting your veteran spouse doesn’t mean you have to put your dreams and goals on hold. The VA provides educational assistance to military dependents and spouses under two main GI bill programs: Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) and the John David Fry Scholarship (Fry Scholarship).

VA benefits for surviving spouses

VA surviving spouses are entitled to several other benefits to help better their lives. These benefits include the following:

VA home loan programs

A certificate of eligibility (COE) allows surviving spouses to build, refinance or repair a home. Once you apply for the certificate, the VA will provide financial counseling to help you navigate mortgage payments. With this help, you can make more informed decisions.

Survivors pension

Did your spouse serve even a day of active duty during a war period? If so, you may be entitled to a VA survivors pension if you meet the net worth and income levels set by Congress. You have to apply to qualify for these benefits.

Burial benefits

The VA can help you prepare for a veteran spouse’s burial. You can also apply to receive financial assistance for grief counseling, burial costs and memorial items.

Long-Term Care

Surviving spouses can receive up to $13,560 yearly to help cover long-term care costs. This money can help with the cost of nursing homes and assisted living programs. It also helps ensure you are safe and cared for in your old age.
